NYC’s iconic Magnolia Bakery comes to Bengaluru

arly 2000s kids will remember an inconvenient confluence between the popularity of low rise jeans and cute cupcakes in every hipster girl’s starter kit. The aesthetic began a few years earlier, but was firmly nudged into the cultural consciousness by Sex and The City’s Carrie Bradshaw, her best gal pals, and their entanglements with a series of archetypical beaus. In an episode emblematic of the zeitgeist, Carrie and Miranda discuss the former’s latest flirtationship over cupcakes smothered with tutu-pink icing. The signature frosting caught the eye of local foodies and a neighbourhood business transformed into a cult favourite. Magnolia Bakery was where one answered the burning question – what good is a gossip without the accompanying sugar rush?

One doesn’t have to navigate the mean streets of New York City for a frenzied tête-à-tête over something comfortingly sweet anymore. Bengaluru’s Manic pixie Indiranagar is the latest home for these treats with the arrival of Magnolia Bakery’s first store in India. Pastel prettiness in a whimsical ambience offsets the unforgiving steel and sweat of the Gold’s Gym a floor above. Small tables line the glass front, becoming an oasis of temporary calm in maddening Ooru traffic. Cakes and cookies beckon enticingly from behind gleaming glass or perched on cream counters. Those in need of some confectionary comfort can now find it on a convenient corner of the most SATC-esque hood of the city.

Despite being famous for their cupcakes that are more sweet buttercream than crumb, Magnolia Bakery’s true stars are their other offerings. A decadent concoction of coconut shavings, condensed milk and walnuts, its magic bars are the hearty indulgence one needs when detailing the utter uselessness of men to your mains. If only a bite-sized morsel is called for to analyse briefer liaisons, one can’t go wrong with their sugar-dusted crinkle cookies that collapse tenderly on the tongue within a single bite. And in cases of true scandal, icebox bars of every variety invite you to spill the tea already – choose between a peppermint and chocolate-chip bar reminiscent of a Grasshopper cocktail to a peanut butter and chocolate business that will have you forgetting Reese and his candy cups. Banana Pudding, which has yet to reach desi shores but is on its way we’re reassured, will have to be reserved for true emergencies.
Magnolia isn’t just filling the gaping space the early noughties have left in our elder millennial lives. In a nod to its new digs and just in time for the festive season, a take on the local Christmas favourite—plum cake—is likely to make an appearance. And if the Ooru’s nippy mornings have you missing the sweltering summer already (why?!), seek solace in mango flavoured treats that are soon to stud Magnolia’s shelves.
From her perch on a Bleecker Street bench, Carrie painted a portrait of an indolent writer’s existence that became unrealistic #goals for many an Arts student in sleepy Bangalore a scant couple of decades ago. Traffic snarls and invoicing hell in the startup city has rid us of these silly notions, but with Magnolia Bakery closer than ever before, the sweetest portion of the fantasy still holds strong.
Magnolia opens to the public on 7 November. Rs120 for a cupcake. 788, 12th Main Road, HAL 2nd Stage, Doopanahalli, Indiranagar, Bengaluru
