1. 4K TVs

Don’t worry if you missed out on Black Friday TV deals. Retailers offer arguably better deals on higher-quality sets (instead of cheap doorbuster ones) in the leadup to the Super Bowl. Start searching around mid-January to maximize your options and don’t forget to insure your on-time delivery if you order online.

Last year, we saw Big Game-related sales at Best Buy, Walmart and warehouse retailers, such as Costco and Sam’s Club. Amazon tends to be pretty aggressive about price matching, so make sure to compare prices before you buy.

2. Bed and bath items

The retail tradition of January “White Sales” — sales on sheets and towels — is a long one, stretching back about a century. While retailers may not use that exact terminology when advertising their deals, they do throw home goods sales during early-to mid-January.

Traditional department stores, as well as online home goods retailers like Wayfair and Overstock, will throw bed and bath sales during this time.

3. Exercise equipment and fitness trackers

At-home fitness equipment reliably goes on sale in early January to attract resolution-makers. Check out specific brands (NordicTrack, Bowflex), as well as Amazon.

Fitness trackers are another smart January fitness buy. Last January, we saw Fitbit discounts of up to 30% off from JCPenney, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Macy’s and others. Samsung also offered $50 off its fitness watches in early-to mid-January last year.

4. Winter clothing and coats

Winter is still in full effect right after Christmas, and it’s a great time to buy heavier clothing and coats. Stores start stocking spring styles as early as February, so they’ll start marking down cold-weather items in the new year to make way.

Dillard’s is also known for its huge New Year’s Gifts Day clearance sale, which heavily features clothing and boots.

5. Formalwear

Wait until Jan. 1 to save big on all the sparkly, formal attire stores didn’t manage to sell to holiday partygoers.

6. Mattresses

Whenever consumers have an extra day off work, mattress retailers tend to throw mattress sales. Not just brick-and-mortar stores get in on the action, but online retailers as well. So be sure to check out your options from Bear, Casper, Purple, Eight Sleep and similar.

Last year, Purple and Eight Sleep both offered online promo codes in January, while Mattress Firm offered discounts and gifts online with purchase.

If you’re in the market for a new mattress, note that your options have grown increasingly tech-savvy, with features such as individual temperature control on each side, as well as integration with sleep-tracking apps.

7. Travel

The cruise industry’s “Wave Season” starts in January. It’s a popular time to book a cruise; the holidays are over, winter is getting old and spring break is on the horizon. To differentiate themselves, cruise lines offer extras, including onboard credits, beverage packages and cabin upgrades.

If you’re flexible, the early new year is also off-season in Europe, meaning less-expensive accommodations and flights. Tap or click here to spot 3 mistakes to avoid while traveling.

Check out online booking companies and aggregators, including Booking, Expedia, Hotwire and CruiseDirect to find deals.

8. Anything holiday-related

Start shopping for everything festive starting on Dec. 26. This includes artificial trees, string lights, ornaments, ugly Christmas sweaters and Christmas crafting supplies. If you don’t mind holiday packaging, it’s also a great time to pick up chocolates, popcorn and makeup palettes designed for online gifting site in India.
