Here are some different ways to celebrate Mother's Day 2020 and show her you care, even if you cannot be with her in person
Mother's Day 2020 looks to be a very different one to years gone by, in amidst an international pandemic.
Earlier this week the public were advised to avoid any 'non essential travel', social gatherings or visits to places such as care homes, all of which restrict the traditional things you would tend to do on Mothering Sunday.
Those over the age of 70 also being asked to stay at home for 12 weeks from this weekend, as they are most vulnerable to the coronavirus.
So it may be that you are unable to go and see your mum on Sunday, or you might be together but just unable to go anywhere. However there is no need to panic, as Edinburgh Live have put together a list of some of the best ideas that will still put a smile on your mum's face, international pandemic or not.
1. Send a card or a gift in the post
Royal Mail have confirmed it is safe to send Mother's Day gifts online in the post, as the virus cannot survive for long on objects such as letters and parcels. Post men and women will also not hand parcels over directly, they will leave them by the door and wait at a safe distance for them to be picked up.
2. Send Flowers
Again, sending a lovely bouquet is a great way to spoil your mum from afar. There are a huge range of local florists in Edinburgh that you can support during this difficult time, whilst also getting a stunning arrangement and a great deal. For example, Serenata florists in Edinburgh are currently doing a free Mother's Day gift delivery service.
3. Family Video Call
Whether it's Skype or Facetime, if you and your family are apart this Mother's Day why not set up a group call and spend some virtual time together, from a good catch up to a family dinner, everyone is just a quick call away.
4. Take a walk
If you are able to be together on Mother's Day gifts online delivery but don't feel comfortable going anywhere too busy, social distancing guidelines recommend taking a walk outdoors as long as you are not in a very crowded area. So why not head to your nearest park, reservoir or open space and spend some quality time together.
5. Stick on a box set or new TV series
With sites such as Netflix and Amazon Prime you will never be stuck for something to watch, so if you can be together why not start a new series? Or if you're apart you can both watch it and chat online about what you think.
6. Buy vouchers for later
If you had plans to go out to a restaurant or cafe for a special Mother's Day gift treat, the majority are still open so if you felt comfortable going the option is still there. However the latest advice is to avoid these areas, so why not give her a voucher for another time, some eateries such as Tigerlilly have extended the length of their gift vouchers to 12 months, so you can wait for another date in the future to celebrate.
