CARY, N.C. — NC State graduates Hanadi Asad and Jamaal Ali had wanted to start their own cafe for more than a decade before finally following their passion.
"Our families discouraged us from that for quite awhile," Asad said.
The couple married and had five children, but baking was always something Asad wanted to pursue.
"We both worked full time. Then we started having kids. So, I started looking for other options of things to do while staying at home. So I started doing some of the Mediterranean desserts."
After 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry, Asad decided to explore full-time baking in 2015. They started with farmers markets and last year opened Asali Dessert Cafe in Cary.
The cafe is designed to give customers that extra attention by having their food and drinks brought to their table.
"We want to treat our customers," Asad said.
But 10 months after opening, Asad has had to reduce staff and pivot to curbside to-go orders amid the coronavirus.
"Business is extremely slow so we've been trying to utilize key personnel," she said.
Delivery is also being offered within a five-mile radius of the shop.
Asali is still offering custom cakes to India online though, including a recent child's birthday cake delivery.
"We put the message on the cake online order, took a picture and sent it to them," she said. "They had us cut it into pieces and box it up."
The slices were then sent to the children's friends so they could all celebrate at home.
You can send cakes to India online for same day cakes online or midnight cake delivery in India at the best prices.
