THIS KOLKATA HOME HAS A TRADITIONAL SPIRIT WITH A MODERN EXPRESSION

You find yourself face-to-face with a Seema Kohli painting the moment you step into the living room. Set against a dark, textured backdrop, the painting makes a resounding first impression. The living room with its tufted sofas, ornate chandeliers, and textural complexity is resplendent in its traditional splendour but a modern context. And that's the best part about this home -- "a home with a traditional spirit and modern expression," says Ajay Arya, Principal Interior Designer, ASquare Designs.

The home located in the upscale neighbourhood of Belvedere Road in Kolkata, belongs to a business family. "The owners, a senior couple, their son and daughter-in-law and the grandchildren, wished for a statement in spatial luxury, a contemporary living space with ethnic accents," informs Ajay. When Ajay took over the 3500sqft apartment, the space was absolutely raw. The previous owner had done some basic civil work. Perhaps this worked perfectly well for Ajay. It gave him the freedom to realign the space completely.

It was initially a 5BHK apartment. But the owners were averse to the idea of small, cramped spaces. So Ajay decided to break some walls and make some space. The 5BHK home was converted into a spacious 4BHK, with one bedroom being erased to create larger spaces. "Vastu also played a significant role in the realignment. We made a lot of structural changes to optimise space. For instance, the original living room became the young couple's bedroom; while the erstwhile guest room and dining area were transformed into a connected formal living and dining room complete with an informal lounge," informs Ajay. The walls in the public zone were replaced with glass partitions so that the formal living room, the dining area, and the informal sit-in could coalesce into a large entertainment area for social gatherings.

A graphical abstract Sandeep Khule painting adds a dose of colour to the dining area. The dining bench upholstered in Sarita Handa fabric beings in the ethnic flavour even as it provides an interesting contrast to the marble tabletop.

"But the most challenging part of this assignment came by way of the ceiling with its varying heights -- from 8.5ft to 9ft. The low ceiling made the interior designing process extremely arduous. False ceilings were kept to the minimum, just enough to house the light fixtures and electrical conduits," he informs.
