To create awareness about road safety, Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter Kalvakuntla Kavitha has launched an online campaign, urging women to present helmets to their brothers during the upcoming Raksha Bandhan festival.
On Raksha Bandhan, a sister ties a rakhi (sacred threat) on the wrist of her brother, praying for his long life, prosperity and happiness.
This year the festival will be celebrated on August 7.
“Every day about 400 people die in two-wheeler accidents across the country because they don’t wear helmets,” Kavitha, who is also a ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi MP from the state’s Nizamabad, said in a statement. “Let us join hands for our brothers’ safety. Set a new trend this Rakhi: Gift your brother a helmet,” she appealed.
Amongst the vehicle categories, two-wheelers accounted for the highest share (28.8%) in total road accidents in the country in 2015, according to the latest report on the issue, released by the road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari last year.
